The Governor of the Western Province, Marshal of the Sri Lanka Air Force Roshan Goonetileke launched a Web GIS application last Friday titled ‘WP Covid’ which employs real-time data to map out Covid-19 hotspots within the Province.

This initiative, a brainchild of the Governor is driven by the motive of equipping relevant Public Health Authorities with statistics on Cluster Maps, Patient Contact Tracing along with other vital content that will undoubtedly aid the Western Province’s efforts in preventing and curtailing the spread of the virus.

Designed with the collaborative effort of Colonel (Rtd) Rasika Kahadagamage and his team of technical experts alongside medical expertise provided by the Provincial Director of Health Dr. Dammika Jayalath, Dr. Weddesinghe and other Medical Officials attached to the Western Province Health Ministry, the interactive Web GIS application uses illustrative graphics for users to examine the available analytics with ease.

The Central Government Health Ministry too has shown a keen interest in employing this system on a larger scale with the use of island-wide analytics as it will inevitably be a great tool for relevant authorities in making proactive decisions in the future with regards to our fight against Covid-19!
